Europe has always held a certain sway over American travelers. Perhaps it’s the history, the architecture, or its status as the cradle of western civilization – whatever the reason, Europe is a first-class destination. And so, we secure our flights, await our summer vacations, hop the pond, and arrive! Our first impression: Europe certainly lives up to its reputation… But is it always this hot and humid? And crowded?

Well, no, it’s not. Fall in Europe is a wonder. The weather is temperate, the crowds have disappeared, and the vistas are stunning. Here is a shortlist of Europe’s top five fall destinations, curated especially for the business class traveler.

Rome, Italy

Italy is a dream in fall. The country hosts harvest festivals throughout. Of course, you can hop-scotch around Italy, attend harvest festivals and find sublime beauty nearly anywhere, but Rome is the epicenter. Adding to the established mystique, visible history and culture of Rome is its month-long celebration of jazz in November. Whether you take in the sounds of Artie Shepp, Federica Michisanti, or Gabrielle Coen performing Leonard Bernstein, you simply can’t go wrong with the Roma Jazz Festival.

Paris, France

Autumn colors peak in much of France, early November. At this time, Paris becomes a splash of color from an impressionist’s brush. The city has played muse for many an artist and writer over the years. In fall, the inspiration greets you everywhere, and art takes over the city. The Grand Palais and Petit Palais are transformed into massive galleries of international art. The International Contemporary Art Fair (or FIAC) runs October 17-20 and is followed by the Salon du Chocolat, for those who would rather taste their art. And it’s only a flight away.

Palma de Mallorca, Spain

“Carry me, caravan. Take me away. Take me to Portugal. Take me to Spain.” The Doors had it right. They just needed to be more specific. If you’re a business class traveler looking for a true extension of summer, Mallorca is your destination. It’s summer all-year-round in Mallorca. Crystal blue waters sweep up white sand beaches coaxing relaxation. Also, fall is surf season. Maybe you’d like to take in a movie. San Sebastian hosts its annual Fantasy and Horror Film Festival (in case those beaches made you too relaxed).

Cologne, Germany

High-end fashion, smaller boutiques, or the world’s most popular brands, Cologne has everything for the avid shopper – including a nice, frosty beverage once you’ve finished. Cologne is famous for its beer. But it’s also famous for food. Every year Cologne hosts Anuga, the world’s largest trade fair for food and beverages. This year, Anuga begins October 5.

As October progresses, Germany gets gradually colder. But the harvest festivals and amazing foods continue to roll out. By the end of November, the Cologne Christmas Markets begin to open up! But we’ll save the Christmas Markets for a later blog.

London, England

Perhaps, however, your interests lie elsewhere. London, the premier city for fashion and style, also hosts Salon International for the latest in hairdressing.

If you’re interested in experiencing dramatic landscapes in the crisp autumn air, make the UK your fall destination. A brisk walk through the English countryside, just outside of London,  is wonderfully complemented by a proper pint in a fire-lit pub.
